How to Set Up a Wifi Router (Step-by-Step)

Here’s a step-by-step guide for setting up your Wifi router, whether it’s brand new or being reset for a fresh configuration.

Connect the Hardware

Turn off your modem. Connect the modem to the Internet port (usually yellow) on the Netgear router using the Ethernet cable. Power on your modem, then router. Wait for the Power and Internet LEDs on the router to turn solid green or white.

Connect Your Device

Wi-Fi: Look for the default Wi-Fi name (SSID) printed on the router label (often on the bottom or back), like NETGEARxx or NETGEAR_EXT. Ethernet cable: Plug directly into one of the router’s LAN ports.

Access the Router Setup Page

Open a web browser.
In the address bar,
type: url like as "https;www.routerlogin.net"
You’ll be prompted to log in.

Log In

Default Username: admin Default Password: password (These can be changed during setup)

Connect Devices to Wi-Fi

Use your phone, laptop, or other devices to connect to the new Wi-Fi network using the name and password you created.

Troubleshooting Tips

If you can't access routerlogin.net, try 192.168.1.1. If the router's LEDs never stabilize, try a full power cycle (unplug everything for 30 seconds). A factory reset may help if the router was previously configured.

Common Netgear Router Login Errors & Fixes

1. "Site Can’t Be Reached" or "Server Not Found"
  • Make sure your device is connected to the router’s network (Wi-Fi or Ethernet).

  • Try accessing:

    • http://192.168.1.1

    • http://192.168.0.1

    • or http://routerlogin.net

  • Try using Incognito/Private mode in your browser or clear the browser cache.

How to Fix

Step 1: Connect to the Network
Make sure your device (PC, phone, tablet) is connected to your NETGEAR router’s Wi-Fi or via Ethernet.

      4. Reconnect using the default SSID and password.

Check for Internet Issues

    • Make sure your modem is online (check the lights).
